It’s the penultimate episode of Retro House Mixtape for 2018 and I promise you that this is a 100% #Whamageddon safe zone. I got a bit carried away this week which is why the episode runs a little longer than usual. Maybe I’m just a little excited about next week’s bumper end-of-year episode. 

There are some big house movers in this week’s mix; Jocelyn Brown makes her Retro House Mixtape debut at the start of the mix and then re-appears later on with Da Mob for ‘Fun’. Alan Braxe pops up with his crazy disco hat on. David Morales drops by with his classic ‘Needin’ U’. There’s a surprise appearance by Erick Morillo’s 90’s pop project ‘Reel 2 Real’ via a remix by DJ Duke. Deep Dish also makes their second appearance in as many weeks with their sublime track ‘Say Hello’.

I thought I’d switch things up this week by putting together set based solely around one genre of house music. I’ve enjoyed dropping the more bass heavy tracks in the previous episodes. I figured it would be fun to do a whole episode based around ‘Speed Garage’. These days it’s probably more known as ‘UK Garage’ but I’m a stickler for old habits. The tag ‘Speed Garage’ takes me back to digging through the racks at records shops for those elusive bootlegs.

There’s a little smattering of the funky ‘London-vibed’ vocal stuff at the start of this mix but it’s not long before the bass bin bangers start to drop. I tried to avoid the huge anthems (Spin Spin Sugar, Gunman etc) so I could make room for more lesser known tracks, I did get a request for Ripgroove however so I’ve dropped in a remix to keep things fresh.

Here it is! Retro House Mixtape – Episode 1. For the foreseeable future I’ll be regularly digging through my vinyl collection for those 90’s and early 00’s house tracks that perhaps flew under the radar at the time or have been somewhat forgotten since they originally blew up in the clubs. Of course there will also be a few cheeky remixes of some outright classics thrown in for good measure (because I just can’t help myself sometimes).

These will all then be bundled into a 60 minute DJ set that will be available to stream online.  In this particular set you’ll find my ‘Finally/Sweet Harmony’ bootleg that I made a few years ago.
